Last Thursday saw the 3rd round of games in the Berkshire Squash Winter League. The 1st team were away to Reading University 2nd team whilst the 2nd and 3rd teams were at home against Bracknell 4 and Wellington 5 respectively.

Maidenhead 1 vs University 2
Maidenhead 1st team narrowly lost to a strong University 2 away from home.
With University 2 fielding their best team and Maidenhead weakened by the loss of 3 of their stronger players, the team did well to push their opponents all the way and to lose narrowly 3-2.
Individual Scores were as follows:

Maidenhead 2 vs Bracknell 4
A convincing 19-6 win for the 2nds against Bracknell 4, but it needed some good squash to do it. We welcomed back Ian Prentice, who longstanding players may remember of old, but who now plays for Bracknell.
James Somers made his bow for the team against Ian, and apart from a run of seven straight lost points in the first game was totally in control (he only dropped 2 other points in the whole match).
Andrew's match against a tricky opponent went to 5 games. It was not clear at the end who was crosser - the Bracknell player for losing, or Andrew for not quite playing to his recent high standards in games 1 to 4.
Janak won 3-0 in a noisy affair. Alex forgot to get across the line against an old adversary from his days playing at Bracknell, but Damian wrapped it up with a 3-1 win.
We are now 2nd in the league, 5 points behind Datchet & Windsor 2 who we meet on the 10th November, after a game against Beechdown on 27th October.

Maidenhead 3 vs Wellington 5
Player issues in the first two teams again had a knock on effect to the 3rds who lost 3-2 at home to Wellington 5.
Wellington 5 turned out a strong team winning the first 2 matches to surge ahead. But with Maidenhead winning the next two it came down to Matt Vickers who was playing their very strong 3rd string (who was their 1st string last time the two teams met)!
Despite losing the 1st game, Matt put in an heroic effort to win the next two games and give us a chance of winning the match. Sadly, his opponent came back rejuvenated to steal the last two games and give Maidenhead 3 their first defeat of the season.
A great effort throughout though and we are still 3rd in the table, one place of the promotion places!
